The Rethymno Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1934. It has a 21 member Board, which is elected every four years. Membership includes approximately 6,500 Rethymno companies of all economic sectors. Rethymno is in an advantageous geographical position, located in the most central part of Crete. This fortunate locale ensures easy and quick access to both the east and the west side of the island.

The lion’s share of the Chamber's activity is directed towards member support and business development. Meanwhile, the Chamber is involved in the Chamber Group for the Development of Greek Isles, a public entity involved in island matters on the national level. The objective is to pressure the European Union to secure specific financial aid to compensate for the developmental disadvantages associated with the islands vs. mainland economies.

But the Chamber’s role is not merely the support of its member companies. It also undertakes various initiatives in the quality of life arena and environment and culture. These are considered directly linked to the development of Crete, a region where the most important sector of the economy is tourism.

Projects to protect of the natural and man-made environment and amelioration of the quality of life are paramount. Ensuring the maintenance of the island’s character and the development cultural programs are vital for business survival and prosperity of the region.

There is a clear need to develop multiple partnerships (through networks) between firms and farms of the local primary sector. Together with the existing companies that create primary products, trade and hotel and catering sectors the challenges are clear. The promotion and visibility of traditional local Greek products along with increased foreign visitors is necessary to maintain a stable demand for these products both in the rest of Greece and abroad.
