Piraeus Chamber of Tradesmen

The Piraeus Chamber of Tradesmen was founded in 1925 as Chamber of Professional, Small & Medium Sized Industries of Piraeus. It has operated autonomously, as the Professional Chamber of Piraeus, since 1940. Its members, active in the trade and services sectors of Piraeus, number about 25,000, 3,500 of which are working in the island regions within the Chamber’s jurisdiction.

The geographical area covered by the Chamber includes, among other, insular locations:

  • Piraeus (seat of the Chamber), and one of the most important ports in the Mediterranean with vibrant tourism, trade, transport and shipping traffic. It is the main port connecting the mainland with the islands.
  • The islands of Salamis, Aegina, Agistri, Hydra, Poros, Spetses, Kythera, where tourism is the main source of income. The development on these islands face more challenges compared to the mainland, as a result of their location and geography.

The mission of the Piraeus Chamber of Tradesmen is to facilitate the establishment of a free, flexible, competitive and modern business environment, which will promote the productive assets of the country. The Chamber is here to highlight the areas of trade and industry that function as the commercial engines of the economy. The goal is to support and stimulate viable and sustainable economic growth.

At the same time, the Piraeus Chamber of Tradesmen participates in shaping economic policy in general to prepare the economic environment to further attract and promote Greek and foreign investment.

To achieve this, the Chamber offers, a daily basis, counsel to associations, organizations, local and regional authorities as well as political leaders —including government officials and parliamentarians— articulating documented positions and proposed solutions. This is executed by organizing meetings and presentations, as well as a consistent flow of information to members through the submission of memoranda.

Evidence shows that the development of Piraeus is directly linked to the wealth of the sea. Therefore, one of the Chamber’s primary objectives is to upgrade the port of the greater region of Piraeus to a shipping center, to concentrate the Maritime industry, foster competition and make the region a magnet for global shipping.
